I’ve seen today that someone asked this question at SitePoint forums. Look at the answers:
1. “No because the vast majority of them use nofollow on the links which makes google ignore them.”
2. “Even if they didn’t use nofollow, they’d still be next to useless for increasing PR, and more importantly, next to useless for improving rankings.”
3. “In social book marking you can improve pr, but you can get good traffic.”
4. “I believe you can benefit traffic from social bookmarking sites rather than getting quality inbound links for they uses nofollow on their links.”
5. “I’d have to agree that the traffic is about the only value of social bookmarking, and in reality the amount of traffic 90% of the time isn’t worth the time and effort it takes to submit your site. :2cents:”
6. “It depends on your content but from a SEM perspective, social bookmarking, can have a big impact. Targeting some of the big sites straight away (del.icio.us, digg, reddit etc) will probably see you get very little return, but targeting social bookmarking sites that are more targeted at your niche (if there are any) can bring you traffic and in my personal experience, bring you plenty of links which in turn may also see your site bookmarked at some of the larger bookmarking sites, which may then lead to more links and more exposure.
This obviously doesn’t have a direct impact on SEO but everything you do should be looking at the wider picture. Focusing on one area like SEO and casting it aside straight away if it isn’t related is bad as promoting and marketing your website is much, much bigger than just getting links without nofollow.
Social bookmarking definitely won’t directly help increase PR or your position in the SERP’s but every link is worth something in the grand picture of everything as everything you are doing should be to attract users to your site, with the search engines being just a small part of that.”
There are a few more answers which formed a good discussion.
My answer
It is wront to think of social network as something that would boost your PR. You’re there to communicate with others or you are just not there! Don’t post something that is spamming, advertising or just meaningless pease of text. Try to be socialilezed.
